You’ve just checked off most of the list for why I don’t want to live in Austin anymore. It is a once-beautiful, artistic, laid-back music town. These days, though, it’s stuffed with traffic and the real estate moguls are tearing down historic clubs and music venues to make way for condos and mixed-use complexes. People live in them like rats in cages and they can’t seem to get enough of it. More and more are moving here and driving up housing prices, so that musicians and artists are driven out. My partner and I are among them, looking for a place to migrate to where we can have a little more space and still do the things we love. Overpopulation and overpricing isn’t just happening in California.
